Rajkot is situated in the Saurashtra region of the western Indian state of Gujarat. The city is located at latitude 23°32' in the North and longitude 70°4' in the East. Rajkot is a major industrial city of the state of Gujarat. Rajkot is one of the biggest centre for engineering industry having a large number of foundry, diesel engines, automobiles, machine tools & bearing units. It is also famous for handlooms, handicrafts and jewellery.

It is situated 798 kms. from Mumbai (Bombay), 101 kms. from Junagadh, 193 kms. from Porbandar and 216 kms from Ahmedabad.

Once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra, Rajkot was also the headquarters of the British Government. It is best known as the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan to the king of Saurashtra. Mahatma Gandhi did his schooling from Alfred High School now known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi High School.

The State Transport Corporation runs regular buses to and from the city to other cities of Gujarat. There are buses for Jamnagar, Junagarh, Porbandar, Veraval, and Ahmedabad. There are a number of private bus operators connecting this city with Mumbai, Bhuj, Bhavnagar, Una, Mt Abu, and Udaipur.
